内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 Borobudur which was constructed about 1200years ago in Central Java is now very famous as the biggest Buddhist temple and stupa or tomb in the world. Every day a lot of tourists both foreign and domestic visit it. They can see and learn such stories of Buddhism as Lalitavistara or Budha’s life, Jataka or Budha’s previous life, Avadana or allegory and Gandavyuha or the life of Sudana, an earnest truth seeker, as well as peaceful 504Budha statues and the great central Stupa. Regrettably the visitors cannot see the reliefs of the foot of the structure except a few of them since they are covered with the thick stones to support the structure which began to collapse when it was constructed. But we can see all of them in the photographs which were taken 120 years ago. This article is to reveal the intention of the hidden foot through the investigation of the photographs. Though generally the intention is said to explain to visitors Karmavibanga or the flow of man’s life, that is,man’s good deeds will bring good results to him in his afterlife but the evil deeds will bring bad results, the investigation reveals that the intention of the foot is to teach the visitors the importance of giving alms and preaching as well as hearing sermons since two thirds of all 160panels depict them. The 160 reliefs are very good ethnographic materials through which we can learn the Javanese society and culture at that time. We can see the costumes and the way of life of the upper and the lower class, their ordinary life of enjoying music, dance and acrobatic performance, the look of the market as well as their view of the world and afterlife. When we compare them with the Javanese society of today,we can understand the unchanged life style and differences of Javanese society.
